G98 Micro-Generation and Storage Connections

G98 Micro-Generation and Storage Connections

If you’re planning to connect generators or storage to our network, you must inform us or complete an application. This is an obligation under the Electricity, Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations 2002.

What is G98?

Previously G83, G98 is a UK engineering standard written by ENA.

G98 sets out the requirements for connecting small-scale generation systems to the Distribution Network. G98 applies to all generation installations up to 16 amps per phase (Single phase systems up to 3.68kW and Three phase systems up to 11.04kW). Anything larger will fall into a G99 application.

Why is G98 important?

Following the G98 recommendation ensures small-scale generation installations connect to the grid safety and do not compromise network stability, safety or power quality.

The below video explains what a G98 is, why it's important and how to apply.

Single premises generation and storage connections

If you’re installing a generator or storage at a single premises, it’s unlikely we will need to carry out any work on the network to accommodate your connection.  However, you will need to notify us by completing the G98 form B below for connection of a single premises and return to us by email G98notifications@enwl.co.uk.

Where your generation installation includes an inverter, the rating of the installation is assumed to be the inverter's continuous steady state rating.  The G98 Form B is designed for installations up to 16 amps per phase.

If you require guidance on completing G98 form B, please refer to this helpful guide.

Multiple premises generation and storage connections

If you’re installing a generator or storage at multiple premises, we may need to carry out work on the network to accommodate your connection.  You will need to notify us by completing the G98 form A below application for connection of multiple premises and return via email to connectionapplications@enwl.co.uk

If you require further guidance on the relevant forms for your installation, please see our summary guide. For more information please read the Energy Networks Association G98 connection guide.

Integrated micro-generation and storage

Working in partnership with the ENA, a relaxation was written into G99. This relaxation has primarily been developed where a customer is wishing to combine a G83/G98 generator with an Energy Storage Device. This is also known as a fast track process

To qualify for the fast track process, the following conditions must be met:-

• All generation and/or storage is located at a single installation
• All generating units (including battery storage) are type tested to G83, G59, G98 or G99
• The basic design capacity of each device is up to 32A/7.36 kW
• The sum of the rating of all equipment is no more than 60A/13.8 kW per phase
• Export to the network is limited to 32A/7.36 kW by a G100 scheme

The planned commissioning date stated on the G99 A1-2 Notification form shall be between 10 working days and three months from the date that the notification is submitted to the DNO. Confirmation of the commissioning of each power generating module must be made no later than 28 days after commissioning (where commissioning tests and checks are not witnessed).

We will provide a ‘consent to connect’ or notify you a study/further work is required within 10 working days of receiving your notification.
